My name is Lexie Ma and I studied Psychology and Fine Arts at the University of Hong Kong. During my time there I had the opportunity to study abroad at Cambridge University as well as Mount Holyoke College. Mount Holyoke College is a women’s college specializing in liberal arts education, and I chose it especially because of its commitment to “embolden students to break boundaries, shake off limits, and take the lead.”
DJI is my first full time job after graduation. I have been working here for almost 3 years and have seen the company evolve at an amazing pace. It is an absolute honor for me to contribute to DJI’s global influence and be a part of building something tangible that is changing people’s everyday lives.
When did you join the tech industry and why?
I always had a keen interest in technology, even before joining DJI. One of my internships was within the technology department of a communications marketing firm. Working with a variety of technology sector clients reinforced my desire to pursue a career in the tech industry and help make ingenuous technology more accessible.
I learned about DJI during my senior year of college through one of my old classmates who had been interning in DJI’s R&D department. He shared a lot about his work experience as well as DJI’s overall creative environment. I was inspired by the spark in his eyes and the passion with which he spoke of DJI’s technology and its potential applications. After doing some research, I decided to become a part of DJI’s journey. Back in 2013, almost no one around me knew what a drone was. My friends and family were all pretty skeptical about me giving up offers from well-established companies to join DJI; still a relatively unknown company at the time. Even so, I stood firm in my decision, and have not once felt regret for my choice.
Why this industry? Personally, I feel more comfortable seeing end results. Within just a few seconds of flying a drone, you have immediate access to all these new perspectives on your mobile phone. It’s then you realize how far this technology can go. I am definitely drawn to the tangible aspect of the applications of this technology.
What does change represent to you?
People often question the status-quo, but seldom take action to change the current situation. Change for me is daring to work hard and be flexible no matter what the situation. It is about being humble and welcoming feedback if your point of view is proven wrong. You should of course stand strong by your decisions, but it is equally important to know how to change your direction when required.
How do you react when a situation isn’t in your favor?
I am a strong advocate of being vocal and speaking out well-reasoned thoughts. This may sound cliché, but it’s often easier said than done in a work environment. I try to always keep up a good spirit and work hard to prove my capabilities. In this way, I have been able to gradually turn most situations in my favor.
